Once again poker’s biggest annual event, the World Series of Poker, is just around the corner. Last year's WSOP proved that the enormous growth of poker seen in the last several years has been no fluke. Over 54,000 entrants bought into 55 bracelet events, which are both records in the largest total field in WSOP history.

The 2008 WSOP schedule includes 55 events which matches last year's total. The most interesting change is the delay of the Main Event final table, which will take place almost 4 months after the final 9 players are decided. WSOP officials hope to build increased drama, anticipation, and endorsement deals by having the final table set in July but waiting until November to play out the final table and reveal a winner. Negatives of this strategy include a greater risk of player collusion, potential logistical complications, and possible deal-making scenarios.

Also interesting is the increased number of $10,000 championship events over previous years. In addition to the Main Event once again ending the WSOP there will be 7 other $10,000 events ranging from Pot Limit Hold'em to a Mixed Event featuring a whopping 8 poker variations.

The popular $50,000 HORSE event will return for its third year. Consisting of 5 different limit games and an enormous buy-in, the HORSE championship filters out internet newbies and is largely considered by the pros to be the new crown for the overall best player in poker. It remains to be seen if the new Mixed Event will gain that same reverence.
